Thermapen ONE for quick checks at the grill

What the ONE model brings

ThermoWorks lists Thermapen ONE with a rotating backlit display, motion sensing wake, one AAA battery and a folding probe. The maker specifies a one second response and accuracy of ±0.5°F between minus 4°F and 248°F. Those are published specifications, not measurements from a Cookout Compass test.

The display and the probe solve different problems. An easy viewing angle helps when you reach across the grate. A fast sensor still needs to reach the part of the food you intend to measure. Choose the tool around both tasks.

A useful fit for several quick checks

Consider it when you cook steaks of different thicknesses, chicken pieces that finish separately or small burger patties. You can check each piece instead of treating one reading as an answer for the whole grate.

For a long pork shoulder cook, a thermometer with an alarm and a probe that stays in the meat answers a different question. A handheld check remains useful near the finish, but it cannot alert you while it sits in the drawer.

Placement matters more than the last decimal

USDA recommends checking the thickest part of the food away from bone, fat and gristle. For thin food, inserting from the side helps place the sensing area in the center. Check irregular pieces in more than one place.

Read the ONE instructions for the sensing area and cleaning. The maker's IP67 rating describes water protection. It does not turn the body into a device to leave inside a hot oven or grill.

Check the model before paying for an upgrade

• Read the full name. ONE, Classic, IR and other Thermapen models have different specifications.
• Check the package and support. ThermoWorks listed ONE color closeouts when this guide was checked. Confirm the current color, seller, warranty terms and return conditions.
• Start with the tool you have. If an existing thermometer works properly and is easy to read, identify the inconvenience you want an upgrade to solve.
