Decide who is watching the clock.
| Look for | Useful when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Manual controls | You can change the heat setting when the recipe needs it. | Available heat settings and whether you must switch to Warm yourself. |
| Programmable controls | A timed change to a holding setting suits your cooking routine. | Timer range, what happens at the end and what happens after a power interruption. |
Crock Pot lists Low, High and Warm on its manual 6 quart Cook and Carry. Its programmable 6 quart Cook and Carry lists timed cooking with an automatic change to Warm. Check the exact model and manual. Similar names and different generations can mean different controls.
Six quarts is capacity, not six servings.
A bowl of stew, a meat sauce and a whole roast fill the pot differently. Our beef stew recipe calls for a 6 quart slow cooker and makes about six bowls. That is a recipe estimate, not a capacity promise for everything you put in it.
Follow the recipe and your appliance's fill guidance. Doubling that stew in the planner means two full batches. Use separate suitable cookers or cook in separate rounds. Do not pour twice the food into the same pot.

A travel lid is for the trip.
Cook and Carry models have a locking lid intended for transport. Follow the selected model's instructions on when to latch it. A closed lid does not make a pot safe to leave out without temperature control.
Check the filled weight, stable carrying position and a safe place to set the hot cooker. Read the cleaning directions for the insert, lid and electrical base separately.
Give slow food a safe start and finish.
USDA advises thawing meat and poultry before slow cooking. Keep ingredients refrigerated until preparation and follow the recipe's temperature checks. A timer alone does not establish doneness.
Reheat leftovers with another cooking method to 165°F before moving them into a preheated slow cooker to hold hot. Keep hot food at least 140°F. Read the USDA slow cooker guidance and refrigerate leftovers promptly.
