Match the contact with the food

Tongs are a candidate for turning a sturdy piece of meat, moving corn or lifting food you can grip securely. A turner is a candidate when a patty or delicate piece needs support across its underside.

Think about the food's shape and your cooking surface together. A broad head needs room to slide under the food. Long tongs need enough space to open and close without knocking nearby pieces.

Reach is useful when you can still control the tool

Check the grip with the gloves you expect to use and the distance to the far side of the grate. A long handle does not justify leaning over the fire or leaving a handle against hot metal.

Measure the storage space too. OXO names the tongs as a 16 inch tool, while its specification table lists a longer overall dimension. Check the current full dimensions before assuming they fit a narrow drawer. The storage lock can help with width, not available length.

Check coatings and the serving plan

These candidates have metal working surfaces. Read the cookware or griddle maker's instructions before using them on a coating or seasoned surface. Do not assume that a tool sold for a grill suits every pan.

Choose a main before buying a set

Cheeseburger sliders give a supporting turner a clear job. Chicken skewers and grilled corn let you consider a gripping tool. Buy the missing shape you need, then check its fit and care, rather than replacing working tools with a large set.
